North Carolina commit and potential pro prospect Ben Casparius had, perhaps, his greatest day in Staples uniform Wednesday vs. Stamford.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior righty threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and only two walks in a 18-0 Wreckers victory at Cubeta Stadium. Casparius needed 20 pitches to complete his masterpiece.
He also went a scorching 3-for-5 at the plate, hit two home runs and had five RBIs and three runs in the victory.
“It ranks pretty high up there,” he told the Staples’ student station, WWPT 90-3-FM. “Maybe even the best.”
Casparius had the best day, but he wasn’t the only Staples player feeling it. Max Popken, Chad Knight and Matt Stone also hit home runs, giving the Wreckers five homers against Stamford pitching.
Popken was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and four RBIs in addition to his home run. Stamford committed seven errors in defeat.
Staples improved to 9-6 overall and 83 in the FCIAC. Stamford fell to 6-8 (4-6).
