GROTON >> Brody Adams’ RBI single in the top of the sixth inning broke a tie game and lifted Norwich Free Academy to the ECC baseball championship with a 7-4 victory over top-seeded Waterford Friday night.
NFA, which came into the tournament seeded seventh with 9-11 record, won four games in four days to claim the title. After beating St. Bernard in a play-in game, the Wildcats toppled No. 2-seeded Fitch, No. 3-seeded and defending champion Montville before finally toppling the top-seeded Lancers.
Waterford, which was ranked No. 2 in the latest GameTimeCT / Register Top 10 poll, led 4-0 but NFA started to chip away.
Andy Grant’s two-run single in the fifth inning tied the score at 4. After Adam’s go-ahead single, NFA added two more insurance runs on a single by Caleb Bierman.
NFA’s Robert Thornburn, who had a double, was named the tournament’s MVP. Starter Bierman earned the victory for NFA. Tyler Briggs earned the save with two scoreless innings.
Mike Burrows had two RBIs for Waterford. Chase Speller and Collin Bakken each had one. The Lancers committed five errors.
