STRATFORD >> Cameron Kovachik outdueled Bunnell ace Ronnie Rossomondo by throwing a complete-game shutout while Sam Cleland drove home the only run of the game as Masuk topped Bunnell 1-0 to win the SWC Championship at Penders Field in Stratford.
Kovachik allowed just five hits and struck out 10 to hand Rossomondo his first loss of the season. He retired 12 of the final 14 batters of the game.
Meanwhile, Cleland drove home teammate Nick Maini with a single to right field in the third inning to give the Panthers the only run they would need. Masuk had several other chances to score against Rossomondo (7-1), who surrendered seven hits and walked two while striking out five. But Bunnell’s defense managed to hold.
The Bulldogs’ offense, however, couldn’t score. In the fourth, consecutive singles from Justin Lasko and Ricky DiCicco put two aboard with one out. But Kovachik retired the next three batters on two groundouts and a strikeout.
This was Masuk’s first SWC baseball title since 2008.
The game was twice postponed due to rain. It was moved from Wednesday night to Thursday at Bethel, then moved from Bethel to Stratford’s Penders Field. Even then, the first pitch was moved up to 7:30 before the game got underway.
