Shelton pitching wunderkind Mike Cowell began the season with a no-hitter.
On Tuesday, he began the postseason with another one.
Cowell, who was awarded SCC’s Player of the Year last weekend, threw his second no-hitter of the year vs. North Haven in the SCC Baseball Tournament’s quarterfinals as the Gaels topped North Haven, 3-0, at Shelton.
Errors in the fourth and sixth innings — which allowed North Haven’s Giovanni Torres and Joe Ireland to reach — were the only blemishes on yet another stellar performance, which was the Connecticut’s 16th no-hitter this year.
Cowell actually faced one batter over the minimum. He erased the sixth-inning error on a double play. North Have didn’t a hit a ball out of the infield.
The right-hander also did some damage at the plate with an RBI double in the fifth.
Justin Lynch added an RBI double to score all the runs Shelton needed in the first inning. In the fourth, Paul Salley hit a double and scored on an error.
The only real trouble Cowell faced was in the fourth, when North Haven put a man aboard on the error with on outs.
But after a sacrifice bunt, Cowell got out of the ham with a strikeout and a putout at first base.
