Sophomore Ben Casparius threw a complete-game, four hitter with 11 strikeouts as Staples handed Darien its first FCIAC loss of the season, 8-2, Friday at Darien High School.
The victory was Staples’ eighth victory out of its last nine games.
Staples’ Ross Poulley hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Eric Hawes added the eventual winning run with an RBI single in the fourth. Two more runs scored on a wild pitch and an error to take a 5-1 lead after four.
The Wreckers added three more runs in the seventh to put the game away.
The Wreckers improved to 13-4 and stayed in contention for one of the five remaining spots with an 11-4 league record. Staples was tied with Warde for fourth-place following Wilton’s 4-3, eight-inning loss to Norwalk on Frdiay.
Darien, which has already clinched a spot in the FCIAC playoffs along with New Canaan and Norwalk, fell to 14-3 and 14-1 FCIAC.
Poulley finished with three RBIs. Zach Azadian had an RBI and two runs scored.
Darien’s Anthony DiMeglio was 3-for-3 with two doubles. Michael O’Malley had two RBIs.
