Coach Paul Thees picked up career win No. 500 as Nina Luciani went 13 for 13 serving with three aces and Amanda Vecchio added five kills in Amity’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-20) triumph over Lyman Hall in Wallingford, Friday.
Thees is now 500-152 in 31 season’s, that saw him coach at North Branford, Trumbull and Amity. After the game, his players surprised him by decorating the team bus.
“They had a big splash on the bus of food items waiting, decorations and even your photographer was sitting on the bus snapping away pictures like crazy,” he said. “It was special.”
The coach said one of his former players, Debra Stone, was also at the game. He said it is starting to hit him that he’s reached the milestone.
“Its hit me a little, it makes me feel a little old,” he said with a laugh. “But I have to admit, I couldn’t have done it without my wife and my family, my assistant coaches and my players.”
Thees has led Amity to a 7-1 start to the season. With rival and Southern Connecticut Conference contender Cheshire next up on Monday, the coach was quick to refocus for the next battle.
“It seems like any other win,” Thees said. “You just go ahead and move on.”
