MIDDLETOWN >> Austin Roy had quite a day on Saturday.
RCP’s righthander took the ball against Stamford in the American Legion Junior state championship game. A few hours later, that ball became a piece of Post 105 memorabilia. And Roy’s performance was the stuff of legend.
Roy tossed a no-hitter in leading RCP to an historic 3-0 victory at Palmer Field. It was RCP’s second consecutive Junior Legion title. Post 105 also topped Stamford in last year’s title game.
“Roy’s my No. 3 pitcher, but today he was No. 1.,” RCP coach Jim Nursick said. “I did not foresee a no-hitter. I thought our chances were good. I know Stamford has a great team, they battled us last year.”
Roy was named the tournament MVP.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Roy said. “It was just amazing. To throw a no-hitter in a state championship game is just amazing. My curveball was really working well, so I was able to get ahead in the counts and then my fastball was just dominating. I think like the fifth inning I realized I could actually throw one.”
RCP took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Roy and Luke Matchett.
Zak Lombardo led off the fourth with an infield single and eventually scored on Roy’s RBI ground out to make it 3-0.
“I’m really happy for these kids,” Nursick said. “A couple kids have been here for three years and a couple kids I’m going to have just for the one year, but we’re three small towns, Rocky Hill, Cromwell and Portland. Cromwell and Portland battle as enemies during the high school season and they come and become friends forever after a summer like this.”
RCP defeated Tolland, 7-0, in the quarterfinals before edging Wallingford, 2-1, in the semifinals.
“We can give our General Manager (Jay Hickey) some credit,” Nursick added. “He put this program together. When I started 11 or 12 years ago the program was not that good. This is my fourth championship game, I’m batting .500 now, 2-for-4. And to do it in two consecutive years, that doesn’t happen. That’s the first time in Connecticut.”
