MIDDLETOWN >> Northeast Regional champion Rocky Hill-Cromwell-Portland meets Brooklawn, New Jersey Thursday in the opening game of the American Legion World Series at Shelby, North Carolina.
RCP and Brooklawn play at 12:00 p.m. at Keeter Stadium. The game can be seen web-streamed live on ESPN3.com.
Brooklawn Post 72, the defending national champions, has won a record four straight Mid-Atlantic Regional championships.
This is the third consecutive year a Connecticut team has competed in the World Series. Branford Post 83 captured the Northeast Regional crown a year ago. Branford then lost to Wilmington (N.C.), 5-0, and Petaluma (Ca.), 6-3, in Shelby.
Milford, who defeated RCP in the 2012 state finals, went on to win the Northeast Regional en route to a World Series appearance in Shelby.
The World Series format has changed from an eight team double-elimination tournament to pool play.
Besides Brooklawn, RCP (29-9) faces Southeast champion Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. (ESPN3.com)
Post 105 then completes pool play with a game against Great Lakes champion Midland, Michigan on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. (ESPN3.com)
Also competing in the World Series are Columbia, Tennessee (Mid-South champion); Omaha, Nebraska (Great Plains champion); Waipahu, Hawaii (Northwest champion); and Chico, California (Western champion).
The top two teams from each pool will meet in the semifinals (5 and 8 p.m.) on Monday, Aug. 18.
The championship game will televised live on ESPNU on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m.
