MADISON – Madison had the lead in the fifth inning, but Mother Nature had other ideas Friday night.
Post 79 had just scored three runs with the help of an error, but with one out, the umpires saw lightning in the distance. By rule, the game had to be halted for at least 30 minutes. When the lightning became more frequent and a 30-minute wait would run into darkness, the game was stopped for good and was suspended.
The game will be picked up from that point with Madison ahead of Prospect-Beacon Falls, 3-0. No date and time has been announced yet.
Madison (6-12), the visiting team on its home field, took the 3-0 lead in the fifth as Will McIntosh walked with one out. Prospect-Beacon Falls pitcher Dante DiRubba picked off McIntosh, but first baseman Justin Marks threw the ball into left field as McIntosh was safe at second.
That opened the floodgates as Pat Nelson broke the scoreless deadlock with a single to right. James DeGrasse followed with a double over the head of centerfielder Caleb Shirk as Nelson scored. When the throw went to the backstop, DeGrasse came all the way around to score.
Ryan McAneany then singled, but the lightning and eventual rain began and the game was suspended.
Graeme McGivern was working on the shutout for Madison, and had allowed one hits and two walks.
Prospect-Beacon Falls which returned to Legion baseball after a year’s absence and is 1-20 this summer, having lost its last 20 games in a row.
