CHESHIRE – Liam Davey only pitched 16 innings as a freshman for Western New England University during the recently completed college baseball season.
But it looked like he was in midseason form Friday night as he allowed just two hits and didn’t allow a runner past second base to lead Cheshire Post 92 to a 1-0 victory over Guilford Post 48 in Connecticut American Legion Zone 3 action at Cheshire High School.
“I felt good, even out of the bullpen,” Davey said afterwards. “Usually my changeup is off a bit, but it was on tonight. Everything was low and I was getting ahead of counts. In the very first inning, my arm felt great and the slider and changeup were working.”
Davey only threw 94 pitches, retiring Guilford in order three times and didn’t allow more than a single runner on base in any inning. He struck out nine as well.
“This is his second start since he came back from college His command velocity has improved since last year,” said Cheshire assistant coach Dave Jefferis, who ran in the team in place of head coach Bill Robertson Friday night. “He used to spike his fastball. Anything he missed tonight was just off the plate, which was good to see.”
The only run of the night Davey would need came in the fourth inning when Rams ran into trouble. He walked Ben DeLaubell to lead off the inning. One out later, DeLaubell stole second and scored when centerfielder Jason Strollo lined a single to center.
Despite walking two more Cheshire batters in the inning to fill the bases, Rams was able to get out of the inning. In his five innings on the mound, Rams never retired Cheshire in order as he walked seven batters and had to get out of trouble numerous times as Post 48 left nine runners on base, four in scoring position.
“Both those guys pitched very well,” Guilford coach Mike Yates said. “He had command of all his pitches. We made the plays we needed to in the field and kept ourselves in the game.”
Cheshire improved to 5-1 with the victory and leads Zone 3 at this early stage of the season. Guilford fell to 2-3. The two teams meet Saturday in Guilford a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. and then again on Sunday morning in Cheshire.
