TORRINGTON >> It was bash city in a 13-7 Avon American Legion Baseball win against the Torrington P38s Thursday night at Fuessenich Park.
With a combined total of 26 hits (15-11 in favor of Avon), the P38s hit well enough to put a grin on Coach R.J. Poniatoski’s face, despite the final score.
“For a makeshift lineup with just nine guys, I’m very happy,” he said. “With these hits tonight, we could have won against other teams going away.”
The P38s, 3-9, have suffered through much of the season with good pitching and no hitting.
Against Zone I leader Avon, 8-2, pitchers haven’t stood much chance.
“We started hitting in our very first game, against Unionville, and we haven’t quit,” said Coach Donny Annicelle.
Each team Thursday had a hitter go a homer short of the cycle. Clay Langer (3-for-4, 2 RBI, run) had a double, single and triple for Torrington. Justin Olson (3-for-4 with a walk, 3 RBI, 3 runs) went triple, single, double for Avon.
“I like wood bats,” said Olson, an incoming senior at Avon, who batted .350 in the spring high school season. “You don’t have to swing for the fences. You just lay your bat out and you can control it better.”
Avon’s scoring began immediately, but four runs in the first inning got help from a hit batter, two walks and a Torrington error, along with just two singles.
The big hits came later.
Torrington earned two runs back with three hits in the first, including Langer’s first big hit, a two-run double.
Then the bashing began in earnest.
Sean Del Gallo (2-for-3, 2 doubles, RBI, 3 runs) and Olson led off a three-run Avon second inning with a double and triple. Del Gallo and Jeremy Zarwanski (2-for-5), led a four-run Avon fifth with a double and triple.
Down 11-4 after a pair of walks led to Torrington RBIs by Jake Reynolds and Garrett Coe (3-for-5, run) in the fourth, Langer unleashed his triple to start the bottom of the fifth and two more runs for Torrington.
Olson touched off the final cannon with an RBI double in the top of the sixth.
“I’m never satisfied,” said Annicelle.
Nevertheless, after a spectacular fireworks show by both teams, Poniatoski demonstrated it was hard for anyone to walk away sad.
