On Friday, Hartford’s Fox 61 visited with Gage Davis, one of the four Berlin football players who was deemed ineligible and permanently suspended by the CIAC following its investigation into the program’s alleged recruiting practices.
He and his mother, Liza Davis, denied the charges against them and showed reporter Jeevan Vittal around their Berlin residence.
But they also provided the reporter with a recording of a conversation they say they had with Berlin principal Francis Kennedy and athletic director Dan Scavone.
In it, Liza Davis claims Scavone attempted to convince them to admit Gage was recruited to come to Berlin because it would help convince the CIAC to reinstate him.
“If he was recruited… basically, he wanted me to go to the CIAC and say that so that he can regain eligibility and I said that never happened, that wasn’t true,” she told Fox61. “I believe that they were trying to entice me to say that coach Capodice recruited Gage.”
Here was a transcript of the recording, reported by Fox 61:
Later, on CPTV Sports’ halftime broadcast of the Berlin-New Britain game Friday night, Capodice’s lawyer Viral Keshwala referred to this report as evidence that the investigation was biased against Capodice and should be “thrown out.”
AD: I’m not saying it did happen, I’m just asking if it did happen.
Liza Davis: Oh no. That never happened.
AD: …and if it did happen, you know, maybe you could go to CIAC and say ‘you know something? We were impressionable, maybe we used a little bad judgement, but maybe we were enticed to come here.’ and I think there’ve been past issues…believe me the CIAC doesn’t wanna hurt kids. And they have granted eligibility back to kids if they find out that adults did the wrong thing.
Liza Davis: Yeah, well, that wasn’t the case here.
AD: Well… okay then. Okay. I just wanted to throw it out there if that was the case because that could be a road…I’m just trying to help you.
“It’s been a one-sided investigation,” Keshwala told CPTV Sports producer Francesco Graziano. “When I looked at the report not one thing has been based on fact. They never got a statement from the direct source. That’s our big issue and problem with the investigation.
“I’ve been stating that (athletic director Dan) Scavone had not been cooperative at all. And then today it’s shown that he’s trying to entice and coerce a parent into saying that my client recruited her son.
“He hasn’t recruited anyone and we stand by that 100 percent. And, in light of today’s events that’s valid. What is invalid is the CIAC has ruined the investigation and the report that was submitted.”
