Fifty-six Connecticut wrestlers will take place in the 50th Annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships are scheduled for Friday, March 7th, and Saturday, March 8th, at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, RI. The event is sponsored by the Council of New England Secondary School Principals’ Association (CNESSPA). The wrestling competition will feature the top individual place-winners from each of the 6 participating New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Last year the event involved competitors from 162 teams.
The championship title may likely be decided by the two powerhouse teams from New Hampshire and Vermont that have dominated the event the last 20 years. The Owls from Timberlane Regional of Plaistow NH, have a record 10 New England Championships, while last year’s champion, the Patriots of Mt. Anthony HS in Bennington, Vermont, have won 7 titles. Strong contenders from the other states will be Massachusetts champions North Andover and Springfield Central, Connecticut’s perennial state champ, Danbury H.S., and Newtown HS. From the Ocean State, Bishop Hendricken and Exeter-West Greenwich will bring talent teams to the event. Maine state champion Marshwood HS is also expected contend for high honors.
This year’s field will most likely include the seven returning champions from the 2013 championships: Peter DelGallo of Gardiner ME, Christian Monsserat of Methuen Mass, Kevin Jack of Danbury CT, Christian and Andrew Labrie of Exeter-West Greenwich RI, Andrew Cavanna of Glastobury CT, and Jesse Webb of Mount Anthony VT.
