2014 Litchfield County All-Area Softball Team

Sydney Matzko Area-MVP
Torrington, Sr. Pitcher

Stats: Finished the season 22-2, with 16 shutouts, 317 strikeouts, while only walking 12 batters. She also pitched five no-hitters, including two perfect games this season.
Honors: Three-time All-State, three-time All-NVL, one-time All-Copper, NVL Pitcher of the Year, NVL All-Star Team, school record of 1,157 career strikeouts, United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, CO Sports Academy Softball Player of the Year, two-time Bags Scholarship Foundation Player of the Year, 2013 Register Citizen Female Athlete of the Year.
Off the Field: Presidents Education Award Program for Outstanding Academic Excellence, Connecticut Association of Schools Award of Excellence, Student Honor Medal Award; CIAC Scholar Athlete, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence, Harvard Club of Southern Connecticut Award, M. Tracy Conway Exchange Club Scholarship Pin.
College: She will play the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Liz Newkirk
Northwestern Sr. Third baseman

Stats: Batted .571 with nine home runs and 41 RBI.
Honors: All-State, three-time All-Berkshire League, All-Area girls’ volleyball.
College: She will play softball at the University of Hartford

Brittany Anderson
Torrington Jr. Center fielder

Stats: Hit 10 home runs and had 25 RBI.
Honors: All-NVL team

Monica Swartley
Northwestern Jr. Pitcher

Stats: Went 6-2 with an ERA of 2.02 and 94 strikeouts. At the plate she hit .422 with 23 RBI and helped lead Northwestern to the Berkshire League title.
Honors: All-Berkshire League.

Sara Heath
Torrington Sr. First baseman

Stats: Hit four home runs and had 18 RBI.
Honors: All-Copper Team.
Off the field: National Honor Society
College: Roger Williams University

Abby Hurlbert
Thomaston Sr. Shortstop

Stats: Batted .471 with 41 hits, 31 RBI and 16 stolen bases, she also didn’t strike out once this season. She also helped lead the Golden Bears to their first softball state title in school history.
Honors: All-State, two-time All-Berkshire League, Raymond Marinko Memorial Award, all-area MVP for both field hockey and girls’ basketball.
College: She will play softball at Southern Connecticut State University.

Jenn Luba
Terryville Sr. Catcher

Stats: Batted .458, with 22 hits, five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBI and she scored 18 runs.
Honors: Two-Time All-State, two-time All-Berkshire League.
Off the field: U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished athlete, four-time scholar athlete.
College: Western New England University

Amy Powers
Lewis Mills Sr. Pitcher

Stats: Went 12-7 with a 3.16 ERA and 143 strikeouts. At the plate, hit .400 with 26 hits and 19 RBI.
Honors: All-Berkshire League, two-time All-Berkshire League second team.
Off the field: Honor Roll and two-time coach’s award winner
College: Tunxis Community College

Morgan Sanson
Thomaston Soph. Pitcher

Stats: Went 9-2 during the regular season with 145 strikeouts and won four games in the state tournament to lead the Golden Bears to their first softball state title in school history. At the plate she hit .471 with 32 hits, three home runs, 24 RBI and scored 31 runs. In the state tournament semifinals, she hit the game-tying home run with two outs and down 0-2 in the count and then hit the game-winning base hit to send Thomaston to the state finals.
Honors: All-Berkshire League
