GFA Roundup: Wrestling wins Shelton Invitational

The Greens Farms Academy wrestling team won its second straight Shelton Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday at Shelton High School.

The week in Greens Farms Academy athletics started off with a celebration and ended with a championship. 
 
Here’s a rundown of the how the week went: 
 
WRESTLING 

For the second straight season, the Greens Farms Academy wrestling team went to the Shelton Invitational and returned to campus with the championship. 

The Dragons racked up 156 points to top Canton’s 142 points and Amity’s 138. 

The Dragons were dominant, coming away with five champions and seven finalists. 
Caleb Seyfried (Westport) started the win train and won the 106-pound bracket in double overtime against a tough opponent from Canton.  

Next up was Nico Provo (Stratford) at 113 pounds. Provo was without question the most dominant wrestler, earning all pins on the day scoring key bonus points for the Dragons.  

Next up CJ Shea (Milford) lost a tough 2-0 battle in the finals to Norwalk’s Sam White.  

After that, was Peter Kane (Fairfield). The strong freshman faced returning State Open place winner Luis Bradley of Morgan. In a low scoring affair Kane came away with the 3-2 victory.  

At 138 pounds, senior captain Griffin Seyfried (Westport) was the wrestler of the tournament, earning Outstanding Wrestler. Seyfried pinned his way into the finals where he won the title. 

Mikey Bartush (Norwalk) turned in a strong showing at 145 pounds, winning in the finals by fall. On his way to the championship Bartush defeated Class L state finalist Curtis Fedorko of Masuk in his most impressive win of the season by a margin of 5-1.  

Last up for the Dragons was senior captain Adler Viton. (Greenwich), who turned in a tremendous showing falling just short in the finals by a 5-4 score.  

The Dragons will return to action the 27th at the Lenape Valley Tournament in New Jersey on Dec 27. 
 
GIRLS BASKETBALL 

Georgia Grabowski (Stratford) poured in 22 points to lead the Dragons to a 59-30 win over King. 

Marygrace Dellisanti (Wilton) added 11 points while Katherine Marcus (New Canaan), who was honored for scoring 1,000 career points before the game, added eight more. 

Grabowski had six steals and five rebounds while Marcus had seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Dellisanti added six steals and four rebounds while Kristiana Modzelewski (Westport) had five rebounds and three steals. Kelly van Hoesen (Greenwich) added five steals, four rebounds and a block. 

Van Hoesen netted a career-high 16 points, but the Dragons hit just one shot beyond the arc in falling to Rye Country Day 55-38 on the road. 

It was GFA’s first loss in seven games. 

Marcus had nine points while Grabowski added six more. 

Van Hoesen also had nine rebounds and five steals while Marcus had 13 rebounds and two steals.

Grabowski added seven boards and three steals. 
Marcus and Grabowski combined for 25 points to lead Greens Farms Academy to a 40-30 win over Westover on Saturday. 

Marcus netted 15 points for the Dragons, 7-1, while Grabowski had 10. Sarah Peltier (Stamford) added seven more points for GFA. 

Grabowski and Marcus grabbed seven rebounds. Marcus also had four assists and three steals while Grabowski had two assists and two steals. 

Van Hoesen had six boards and two steals while Modzelewski had five boards and two blocked shots. 
 
BOYS BASKETBALL 

Despite a 28-point effort from Cole Prowitt-Smith (Fairfield), and two chances to win the game at the end of regulation, the Dragons fell in overtime 76-69 at home against FAA preseason favorite Hamden Hall. 

Greg Lawrence (Fairfield) added 16 points for the Dragons while Teddy Brown (Greenwich) added nine more and Kobi Agard (Norwalk) had six. 

Lawrence had 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Prowitt-Smith had seven rebounds and three assists and Brown had 10 boards, three assists and three blocks. TJ Holloway (Orange) chipped in with a team-high five assists in the game while Agard had seven rebounds and three assists. 

GFA is now 2-3. 
 
BOYS SQUASH 

The Dragons swept four of the bottom five spots to pull out a 4-3 road win at King. 

Giani Panariello (Westport) earned an 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 win; Marshall Bessey (Darien) won 11-3, 11-4, 11-2; Will Mackle (New Canaan) was victorious 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 and Piero Panariello (Westport) won 11-5, 11-2, 11-2. 

It was GFA’s fourth straight win to open the season. 

The Dragons dropped their first match of the season facing New England regional power Hopkins and falling by a 7-0 score. 

Blake Newcomer (Greenwich), playing out of the second spot, battled tough in an 11-8, 12-10, 11-5 defeat. 

GIRLS SQUASH 

Clare Foley (Southport) notched an 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8 win at the No. 1 spot and her fellow Dragons swept spots four through seven as GFA evened its record at 2-2. 

Mary Kessler (Westport) won 11-1, 11-2, 11-3; Annabelle Kreitler (Fairfield) won 11-5, 11-4, 11-1; Keely O’Shea (Darien) won 11-1, 11-2, 11-7 and Charlotte Cohen (Westport) won 11-5, 11-3, 11-3. 

Later in the week, the Dragons fell to Greenwich Academy by a 7-0 score.
