WINSTED >> On a muddy Van Why Field, Gilbert/Northwestern’s Tony Ortiz stole the show totaling 294-yards with five touchdowns leading the Yellowjackers to a 48-21 win over Granby.
“Our offensive line is doing great,” said Ortiz a senior, who got 198-yards on the ground. “I can’t get the yards without them.”
Ortiz got the scoring started early, after the Bears turned the ball over on downs on their first drive, rushing for 24-yards and a touchdown on the ensuing drive putting the Yellowjackets up 6-0.
“We wanted to start off strong and get the first touchdown on the board,” said Ortiz.
The Bears got the ball back and one play later, Granby quarterback Curtis Field tried to squeeze a pass into his receiver, but instead he found Yellowjackets’ defensive back, Seth Dayton who intercepted the pass and ran 45-yards for the touchdown.
“That was great,” said Gilbert/Northwestern head coach, Scott Salius. “We talked all week about getting turnovers.”
After Ortiz ran in the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 14-0, the route was on.
The Yellowjackets forced a three and out and after the punt they put together a six play 55-yard touchdown drive, capped off by another rushing touchdown by Ortiz, this time from 27-yards out to extend their lead to 21-0.
“He’s a workhorse, he’s phenomenal,” said Salius. “He’s a great go to guy to have; we have the confidence in him to get the yards.”
The Bears finally got on the board, when sophomore running back, Dominic Pagano scored from 36-yards, capping off a drive highlighted by a 30-yard pitch and catch by Granby quarterback Curtis Field to receiver, Ian Downey.
“I am very happy, we never scored against them in our four years as a program,” said Granby head coach, Rich Gadoury. “It was moral victory for us.”
The Yellowjackets added another touchdown before the half, when quarterback John Lippincott rushed in from eight-yards to extend their lead to 28-7.
“It’s just pure luck to have these two guys,” said Salius about both Lippincott and Ortiz. “They both give 110-percent, they can make things happen.”
On the first drive of the second half, Lippincott found Ortiz who took it the rest of the way for a 53-yard receiving touchdown, making it 34-7.
“Tony is a great back, he helps out both the running and passing games,” said the senior quarterback, Lippincott who finished the game with 133-yards passing and 56 rushing.
Field’s threw one touchdown to Downey and Anthony LaTorre ran one in for the Bears to account for Granby’s second half scoring.
Ortiz capped off his great game with two touchdown runs of 47 and five-yards.
“I just ran inside and then cut outside,” said Ortiz. “I just wanted to do the best I could and help the team win.”
With the loss Granby is now 0-2 but has seen a lot of progress and they are looking forward to the rest of the season.
“I am very excited for the next nine games,” said Gadoury. “As a coach I wanted to get seven points and we very well could have scored more.”
The Yellowjackers will travel to play against North Branford on Friday night, in one of their biggest games of the season.
“We are trying to prepare as the underdogs this week,” said Salius. “We are going to have to play above our level on Friday night.”
Lippincott knows that his team will need to get better from this game if they want to play well against North Branford.
“We have to be better at practice this week,” said Lippincott. “North Branford is a great team, we need a great week.”
