MANCHESTER, N.H. >> Saturday was a good day to be a high school cross country runner from Connecticut. Competing at the New England Championships in Manchester, N.H., Staples’ Hannah DeBalsi ran way with the girls individual title winning in a impressive time of 17 minutes and 15.8 seconds. Her time broke a record on the 3.1 mile course at Derryfield Park. The previous record was 17:32.
Ridgefield’s Trevor Hopper also was victorious claiming the boys 5K title in 15:08 and set a new course record.
On the girls side, Westhill’s Claire Howlett was second (17:39.5), while Gabrielle Richichi of New Fairfield was fifth (17:54.8). Cate Allen of Fairfield Warde was 10th.
As a team, Tolland finished in fourth place place, Glastonbury was fifth, while Staples took eighth.
For the boys, Darien’s Alex Ostberg was second (15:11) and Fairfield’s Chris Alvarado was fourth (15:16.9). Hall’s Ari Klau was sixth (15:41.9).
Ridgefield as a team finished in second place, Darien was fourth, Hall was sixth and Danbury was seventh. Staples took 10th.
