FAIRFIELD >> Fairfield Prep started its season against the team that ended it last year in the Class LL semifinals. Even though the Jesuits weren’t playing Amity with a chance to go to the state final on Wednesday, the game still meant something.

“Coach asked me if I was ready to go for the seventh inning,” said Prep starter Kevin Stone. “I was like, ‘Are you kidding?’ I was ready to go, I was focused. The whole team was today.”

Stone got the last three outs and the Jesuits topped the No. 3 Spartans 3-2 in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivisional season opener for both teams at Alumni Field.

Spartans coach Sal Coppola said his team looked pretty good in its first outing despite the loss. Meanwhile, for the Jesuits, they’re happy with the win, but trying to keep things in perspective.

“It’s good to know you can beat a good team,” Jesuits coach Rudy Mauritz said. “But it’s game one and we’ve got 19 more to go.”

Stone pitched a gem, striking out five and walking one on 98 pitches in a complete game. Shawn Blake had an RBI and Simon Whiteman had two hits.

For Amity, Nick Fusco matched Stone pitch for pitch, striking out three on 85 pitches in six innings of work.

Hit charts and in-depth stats.

“He pitched great enough to win,” Coppola said. “I thought he deserved better, but those guys are good.”

The Jesuits jumped out in front 2-0 in the first inning when Blake singled home Whiteman, who was on second, and moved Dean Lockery to third. Lockery then scored on a double play off the bat of Stone.

Amity clawed its way back into the game after Jake Russo’s third-inning sac fly scored Brett Stevenson, who dodged a tag at the plate by catcher Jake Berry. The Spartans tied it up after Josh Sabitsky scored on an error. There were seven errors in the game, as Amity committed three to Prep’s four.

The Jesuits kept it tied after Stevenson’s great catch in left field. With two on and two out, Sebastian DiMauro hit a shot that got caught up in the wind. Stevenson stayed with it and made the play.

“That was awesome,” Stone said. “Brett did a great job reading the wind out there.”

And for Amity, it may have taken the wind out of its sails.

“Maybe a little bit,” Coppola said. “It took two runs away, I know that.”

Prep broke the tie in the fifth as Lockery reached first on an error that scored Crane, who reached earlier on a drag bunt to lead off the inning.

Great game yesterday at Fairfield University. Game could have gone either way. Quality players and coaches. Great pitching and key hitting. Should be a great spring. Looking forward to seeing both of these teams again.
