Preseason Register Top 10 football poll: Xavier is No. 1

And now, the 2013 New Haven Register Preseason Top 10:

Three-time defending Class LL champion Xavier narrowly edged Ansonia for No. 1 in the Register’s preseason Top 10 media poll.

Xavier finished No. 1 in 2010 and 2011. It was No. 2 behind two-time Class L champion Hand a year ago.

But while Hand was ranked at No. 10, voters seemed much more confident Xavier would not only contend for a fourth-straight Class LL championship, but that it would be the best team in the state.

Ansonia, a two-time 14-0 state champion, came in at No. 2 with 13 votes. 2012 Class LL runner-up NFA earned one first-place vote. Hand received two.

Dropped out: Hillhouse (4), Windsor (3), Staples (7), Glastonbury (8), North Branford (9)
