TORRINGTON >> The Torrington P38s had chances, but they weren’t able to capitalize in a double header sweep at the hands of Avon.

In the second game alone the P38s stranded six runners in scoring position in a 10-4 loss and in the first game they only scored once in a 5-1 loss.

“We did in yesterday,” P38s head coach R.J. Poniatoski said. “You suppose you will do it all the time, but hope you can do it every other time.”

Both starters for Avon, Connor Dunn in the first game, and Matt Boone pitched very well, keeping the P38s off the board for most of the game.

Torrington got one in the first inning of the first game, they didn’t score again until the fourth inning of the second game and then they added three more in the seventh off of Sean Delgallo, who relieved Boone.

“Try to do what works, my fastball early was good to get groundballs,” Boone said.

Boone who just finished his sophomore season at Avon high school, wasn’t fazed when the P38s had runners on.

“He has tremendous potential,” Avon head coach Brian Doyle said. “He doesn’t seem to get nervous, he’s been impressive.”

Torrington’s game two starter, Shane Bierfeldt, struggled allowing 10 runs, nine earned and 12 hits in five innings of work, the big blows came in the third and fifth when Avon scored four runs each.

Game one starter Matt McCarthy kept the P38s in the game late before allowing three runs in the sixth and seventh inning and the defense didn’t help out either, making seven errors combined in both losses.

“We have to think the game, we’re giving extra outs, making mental mistakes,” Poniatoski said.

Torrington has opened up the season on a three game-losing streak.

“We have to concentrate for five weeks,” Poniatoski.

Avon improves to 4-0 and the two game sweep of Torrington was a pleasant surprise for Doyle.

“We hit well in the second game, when you play a double header, you just seem to hit better in the second game,” he said. “It’s great, we have always had trouble here, R.J. does a great job, and we’re thrilled to be 4-0 at this point.”
