In a game that saw two goalies dominate play, Austin Murphy found himself in the right place at the right time and scored at 8:58 of overtime to lead No. 2 New Fairfield/Immaculate to a 2-1 win over No. 1 Newtown in the inaugural SCC/SWC Division III championship game.
Murphy didn’t know he scored the goal until the red light behind the net went on and gloves and sticks flew as the Rebels’ celebration began.
“Joe (Carlucci) did a great job of getting me the puck and I just shot low as hard as I could,” Murphy said. “I couldn’t see the puck after I shot it and didn’t know it went in at first. It was a great feeling when I knew it did.
“Winning this first SCC-SWC championship means a lot. We’re like a family and we worked so hard to get here.”
After a scoreless first period, Joseph Hicks gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead at 6:01 of the second period. Newtown answered when Zach Waller’s wrist shot tied the game at 1 with 1:24 left in the second period.
Both goalies came up with some impressive saves to keep the game a low-scoring affair. Newtown goalie Patrick McLaughlin ended up with 34 saves and New Fairfield/Immaculate goalie Ryan Dobos had 30 saves.
