A sign that the spring season is winding down and football isn’t too far away: The CIAC has announced the programs who have elected to conduct spring practice this year.
There are 46 programs running spring practices this season and 96 who have elected to use an extra week in August.
The number of football teams holding spring practices is significantly down compared to previous years. Last season, approximately 60 teams conducted spring practice. In addition, 60 teams held springs in 2015, 70 in 2014 and 64 in 2013.
Spring football teams are allowed to conduct practice for 10 days no earlier than the Friday before Memorial Day, but they must conclude before the end of the school’s academic year.
Only freshmen, sophomores and juniors are allowed to participate in spring practices. The first three days teams are required to hold conditioning practice without full pads. Athletes involved in spring sports must end their seasons before participating in spring football.
Teams that elect not to participate in spring practice can begin fall conditioning on August 14. Teams conducting spring practice are allowed to begin fall conditioning on August 18.
Below is the complete list of spring/fall practice participants.
Note: Torrington has not listed its selection as of 2 p.m., May 16.
