BRANFORD >> Crosby’s Tyshon Rogers poured in a Class LL-L record 40 points while leading Team Pequot to a 140-118 victory over Team Mohegan in the 39th Annual Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Festival Wednesday night at Branford High School.
Rogers broke the record of 31 points set by Greenwich’s Russ Rosenband in the 2008 Class LL-L game.
Capital Prep’s Stephan Holley also scored a record 40 points in the Class M-S game in 2009.
Rogers, the Naugatuck Valley League’s all-time leading scorer with 2,200 plus career points, made six 3-pointers en route to earning Pequot MVP honors.
Wilbur Cross’ Joshua Fleming scored 25 points and was named MVP for Class L-LL Mohegan.
The annual doubleheader features Connecticut’s best senior basketball players.
Raiquan Clark (Hillhouse) scored 27 points, Obi Momah (Farmington) had 17 points, Wilby’s Taifa Wright added 16 points, Windsor’s Tyler Rowe had 13 points and Hand’s Andre Frederick chipped in 11 points for the Pequot, which built leads of 38-22 after one quarter and 68-46 at halftime.
Also scoring for the Pequot were Brien McMahon’s Larry McKinney (six points), Cheshire’s Colin Jordan (four points), and Woodstock Academy’s Chris Lowry (two points).
For the Mohegan team, Capital Prep’s Levy Gillespie, Jr. and New Britain’s Annuel St. Juste had 19 points apiece, Greenwich’s C.J. Byrd had 13 points, Bridgeport Central’s Tyler Ancrum had 12 points, while Bristol Central’s Jacob Collins and Ledyard’s Darnay Gray each had 11 points.
Also scoring for Mohegan were Darien’s Matt Staubi (four points) and Bunnell’s Isaac Vann (four points).
In the first game of the doubleheader, University’s Jaqhawn Walters earned MVP honors with game-high 29 points while leading Class S-M Constitution to a 139-126 win over Class S-M Charter Oak.
Gilbert’s Yoharkey Sarimento scored a team-high 27 points and was voted the Charter Oak MVP.
The Constitution team made 16 3-pointers, including nine treys in the first half while building a 79-57 lead.
East Catholic’s Winston Morgan had 17 points, Ellington’s Jon Bassett had 15 points, while East Catholic’s Tyrell Arnum and Bacon Academy’s Aaron Lorenzo had 13 points apiece for Constitution.
Also scoring in double figures for Constitution were Cromwell’s Matt Turkington (12 points), Valley Regional’s Jake Luster (11 points), Waterford’s Donny Craig (11 points) and Plainfield’s Ryan Pambuku (10 points).
Seymour’s Tyler Stevens chipped in eight points for Constitution.
For Charter Oak, Wilcox Tech’s Roosevelt Shider had 21 points, Notre Dame-Fairfield’s Jaylen Jennings added 19 points, Bolton’s Colin Cordero and Bloomfield’s Chancie Williams each had 12 points, and Terryville’s Jacob Johnson chipped in 11 points.
Also scoring for Charter Oak were Woodland’s Tanner Kingsley (eight points) and Wolcott Tech’s Luke Pergola (tw0 points).
