Connie Mack: Lemieux throws one-hitter in Torrington win over Tri-Town

TORRINGTON >> Torrington Sports Palace used good pitching, good hitting and, most of all, patience, to wait out Mother Nature for an 11-1 five-inning win over Litchfield/Tri-Town in a Connie Mack game Monday evening at Fuessenich Park

Lead-off hitters started off with big first-inning hits for both teams. Litchfield’s Matt Rollins lined a double to left field, then scored on a Torrington error and sacrifice fly by Justin Bovat.

Rollins’ Torrington counterpart, Ben Thompson, did him one better in the bottom of the inning, with a lead-off triple to right center field. A ground-out by Pat Baker (2-for-3, double, RBI, 2 runs) tied the game.

Torrington kept hitting; Litchfield didn’t.

“I was all over the place in the first three innings,” said Torrington pitcher Cody Lemieux (5 innings, 1 earned run, 1 hit, 6 strikeouts, 1 walk).

That sent baseballs deep for outs in the first inning, with a walk in the second.

Meanwhile, Torrington batters took the lead in the second inning, on hits by Lemieux (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Dave Swanson (2-for-3, double, RBI, run), a walk to Ben Stone and an RBI walk to Matt Baril, then aired it out with five more runs in the third.

Doubles by Baker and Swanson, a triple for Baril, a walk and two errors chased Tri-Town starter Steve Rosko (2.2 innings, 6 earned runs, 7 hits, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks) and seeded the clouds.

An hour later, the last flashes of a thunderstorm were gone.

Up 7-1, the delay was fine with Lemieux.

“I got calmed down and stretched out during the break,” he said.

Three Litchfield strikeouts in the fourth inning found Lemieux’s fastball humming. One more in the fifth put Torrington in position to reach the 10-run difference needed for the mercy rule to kick in.

Baker and Lemieux attacked with a pair of singles in the fourth against Tri-Town reliever Ian Bowman (1.1 innings, 3 earned runs, 5 hits, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk). Litchfield threw in a pair of errors, 9-1.

Next inning, Sports Palace finished the job with singles by Nick Santillo, Spencer Cerruto and Manny Rijo (RBI) for one run. Cerruto came in on a wild pitch for the second.

Torrington goes to 6-3 and a tie with Amenia for first place.

Litchfield is fifth in the seven-team league at 2-9.
