TRUMBULL >> The No. 2 was wild for the Xavier wrestling team on Saturday.
Xavier had two finalists in the CIAC Class LL wrestling championships on Saturday at Trumbull High and the Falcons made the pair of championship opportunities count with two title.
The two championships ultimately led to a No. 2 team finish in the event for the Falcons with 191 points.
Danbury won the event with 272.5 points, for it’s 19th Class LL championship and first since 2014. Newtown was third with 181 and Shelton was seventh with 120.5.
Xavier’s Patrick Moynihan beat Fairfield Warde’s Alex Steele 5-1 in the 132-pound class. In the 160 class, Xavier’s Ryan Devivo defeated Paul Calo of Southington by a 4-2 overtime decision.
Moynihan controlled most of his match, building up a 3-0 lead thanks in part to a takedown and cruised to his second straight wrestling championship. He won the Class LL 126-pound title last season.
“When it was only 1-0, I was a little worried and not so confident,” Moynihan said. “But once I got it to 3-0 I felt a lot better and thought I could cruise the rest of the way.
“This was a tough match, probably my toughest this season. In the last period I just wanted to hold him down and cruise to the win.”
Devivo was a little disappointed in his personal effort but was happy with the comeback victory. Calo took a 2-0 lead after one period. Devivo tied it at 2 after two periods and that’s where the score stood after the third period.
“This was not my best match, I got a little lazy out there,” Devivo said. “I was lazy in that first period and that gave him the two-point lead. But I came back a little fired up and was fortunate to get the OT win.
“It’s definitely great for our team to get two wins tonight.”
Xavier coach Mike Cunningham was happy with his entire team’s effort including underclassmen who got points for the team.
“I’m satisfied getting second place, especially since Danbury was really pulling away,” Cunningham said. “We got a good effort from everyone including some freshmen who got third and fifth.
“I’m happy for Pat getting another championship since he’s a senior and it’s his last time out there.”
Shelton had a pair of finalists and ended up with a win and runner-up finish. In the 195, Ray Weiner of Shelton powered his way to a 7-3 decision over Matt Cuoco of Fairfield Ward, and in the 120-pound final, Jakob Camacho of Danbury pinned Chandler Duhaime of Shelton 1:51.
For Weiner, an early takedown that gave Cuoco two points woke him up.
“When he got that takedown for two points (2-0 lead), that woke me up, it got me fired up,” Weiner said. “I had some exciting matches this season and this one was exciting. The difference here is it was for a LL title.
“It feels great to get this win, to be up there and compete against the best in the state and beat the best in the state.”
In other matches, in the 170 class Joe Accousti of Newtown def. Evan Titus of Fairfield Prep by technical fall 16-0, 5:42. In the 285-pound class, Michael Gaboardi of Danbury decisioned Jacarie Houston of New Haven wrestling 2-1 in overtime.
Earlier in the day in the championship semifinals, in the 106 class Chase Parrot (Westhill) pinned Steven Reyes (Shelton) in 2:40, in the 120 class Jakob Camacho (Danbury) pinned James Lunt (Xavier) in 1:58, in the 145 class Michael Mirmina (Trumbull) decisioned Jake Holland (Xavier) 12-6, in the 285, Gaboardi pinned Daniel Brown (Shelton) 3:07.
