Cheshire Academy basketball player Elijah Pemberton has emerged the winner of an online slam-dunk contest and will participate in the 2016 Slam Dunk Championships (sponsored by American Family Insurance) during the NCAA Final Four weekend in Houston, April. The championship will be broadcast on CBS at 3:30 p.m. April 3.
According to a press release, Pemberton competed in a voting contest with 15 other high school athletes for the past month. Pemberton advanced through the bracket and won the final vote 50.21-49.79 percent over Elijah Thomas of Sunrise Mountain (Ariz.).
“We are incredibly proud of Elijah and the way the Cheshire Academy community and others came together to support him,” Cheshire Academy coach Kevin Kehoe said in a statement released by the school. “We look forward watching him at the slam dunk championships and beyond in his career.”
Pemberton, who attended Xavier and has committed to play at Hofstra next season, will compete with 30 other high school athletes in the championship.
“I’m very humbled by the support I received from everyone,” Pemberton said in the statement. “I’m proud to be able to represent Cheshire Academy and my fellow students in Houston.”
