BURLINGTON >> In a close match it was the Xavier Falcons who came away victorious defeating Lewis Mills, 3-1.
“It was a great match, we play them every year and it’s always good,” Xavier head coach John Post said. “It’s always even.”
The Falcons jumped out early in the first game and held a commanding 17-11 lead, before the Spartans stormed all the way back tying the game at 19-19 before falling to the Falcons 25-22.
“Even if we lose a game we try to build momentum going into the next,” Lewis Mills head coach Damian Coggshall said.
Led by senior Alexander Daigle the Spartans carried their finish in the first game into the second game and jumped out to a 13-6 lead early.
“We tried to establish Daigle in the middle,” Coggshall said. “Our defense played well and that opened up the middle.”
The Falcons, who would make a comeback of their own tying the game up at 21-21 before the Spartans scored the final four points to win the game, were showing frustration throughout the entire game.
“We stopped doing what was working for us and we tried to be the hero,” Post said. “Against Mills you can’t do that.”
Senior captain Kevin Berger spent most of the second game keeping his team in check and before the third game as they walked to other side, he told them to forgot the past game and focus on the next one.
“We got complacent, we felt that since we won game one, we would win game two and game three,” Berger said. “We had to refocus; we couldn’t worry about something we couldn’t control anymore.”
In the third game the Falcons were focused and so was the Spartans who had the momentum.
“We know this game is played on runs and they go back and forth,” Coggshall said.
With both teams playing closely and the Falcons leading 10-9, the Falcons spiked a ball out of bound and it was signaled to be a point for Lewis Mills tying the score at 10-10.
The Falcons all said that the ball was tipped and after both referees talked it over the Falcons were rewarded the point and took an 11-9 lead, which they wouldn’t give back, winning the game 25-19.
“That was a turning point in the game, the momentum changed,” Coggshall said. “We tried to flip the momentum back.”
The Spartans couldn’t as the Falcons took the fourth game, 25-21, and the match 3-1.
“We were confident going into game four, we just had to execute,” Coggshall said. “Not all six players did their jobs at the same time.”
