Cheshire girls volleyball coach Sue Bavone and Ansonia football coach Tom Brockett have been selected as the Doc McInerney High School Coaches of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance. They will be honored at the 73rd Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 27 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
Bavone led the Rams to a 27-0 record and the Class LL state championship, her fourth with the program. Brockett led the Chargers to a 15-0 record and the Class S state championship, his fifth, and the No. 1 ranking in the final Register/GameTimeCT poll.
Bavone has compiled a 20-year record of 403-78, including seven trips to the state finals. Cheshire’s four titles came in 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2013). She has been the Register’s Area Coach of the Year seven times and in 2012, won the honor with both the girls and boys volleyball programs.
The Ansonia football team has won 43 consecutive games, its last lost in the 2010 Class S state championship game. Brockett’s Chargers also captured the Naugatuck Valley League championship (his sixth).
Brockett has compiled an overall record of 104-7 for a winning percentage of .936, the highest winning percentage among the 13 head coaches in the 114-year history of the program.
