Newington’s boys basketball team has had it — well — kind of rough this season. Not that it was unexpected.
The Indians graduated New Haven Register All-State guard Jared Simmons, the school’s all-time leading scorer. They also lost an All-CCC talent in forward Matt McKinnon and entered the 2017-18 season with a new coach, Eddie Quick.
It took the Indians four games to earn their first victory of the season, 57-45 over Tolland on Dec. 28.
But before they could build on that elusive first win, they lost again, thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Farmington sophomore Grayson Herr on Dec. 30.
That kick-started another three-game losing streak and left Newington at 1-6 heading into Thursday’s road game at 4-2 Northwest Catholic.
Sophomore forward Mason Romano made sure the streak ended here.
Down by 1 with 3.9 seconds left, Romano took an inbounds pass and drove to the top of the 3-point line where he sunk the winner as time expired on a 54-52 victory.
We have two versions of the play. The first comes from the (still) aptly-named @MakeItRain222 on Twitter (who also brought us Herr’s winner for Farmington). It’s an opposite court view with a nice look at the wild celebration that inevitably moseyed in his direction:

The second is courtesy of the Newington boys basketball facebook page.
We especially like this one because somebody — the videographer, most likely — was uttering prayers “Oh please, please please…” and then joined a chorus of hosannas when Romano sunk his winning shot.
The Indians improved to 2-6 as they head back home to face 5-3 Southington at Rogalski Gym on Tuesday night. Boy, did they need that pick-me-up.
