Mike Aresco, a New Haven Register All-State kicker last year, cemented his name into the Connecticut High School Football record book with his 44-yard beauty in Friday’s 51-20 victory over Platt.
The field goal was the 22nd of his career, putting him ahead of Wethersfield’s Austin Stefano (who kicked 21 from 2014-2016) for the most all-time.
This is actually the third-consecutive year that the record has fallen. The year before Stefano, Brookfield’s Dane Borges and New Canaan’s Peter Swindell (also both NHR All-Staters) held the mark of 20.
Shelton’s Joe Zoppi matched that record, but Stefano had surpassed him.
Prior to that, Roberto Inesta’s mark of 18 career field goals at St. Mary’s-Greenwich had stood for 44 years.
Anyway, congratulations to Mr. Aresco. You can watch his historic kick, courtesy of the Middletown athletic department, above.
Middletown is 9-0 and has clinched a state playoff spot.
