John Kelly has decided to leave Fairfield Prep and instead enroll and play basketball at Cheshire Academy.
Kelly, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound wing player, will reclassify and repeat his junior year.
“It is hard (to leave). I have a lot of friends at Fairfield Prep,” Kelly said. “It’s a great school. To leave all that breaks my heart, but you have to do what you have to do.”
Kelly will play for Kevin Kehoe, who feels Kelly is a “high volume shooting guard. He’s got good family genes and Ivy League grades. The sky is the limit.”
Kelly, a Shelton resident , will follow his older brother Rich, who played at a post-grad year at Cheshire Academy before signing to play at Quinnipiac University.
“I watched what happened with my brother. When he didn’t get much recruitment (out of high school), that stood out to me,” John Kelly said.
Kelly said the team begins practice around the time he reports to school later this month. Fairfield Prep can’t officially begin practice until early December.
In other Fairfield Prep news, first reported by Adam Finkelstein of ESPN, Pat Harding, who is about to enter a post-grad year at Suffield Academy, will play at Division I Bryant beginning in the fall of 2018.
Kelly, a Register All-Area selection last season, leaves a void to fill at Prep. A number of schools in the SCC are facing the same situation. Hillhouse lost both Byron Breland III and Christian Adams to Hamden Hall, Notre Dame-West Haven lost guard Tim Dawson to Hamden Hall and Aidan Carpenter left Hamden for Hyde in Maine. All are reclassifying.
Fomer Hamden Hall standout T.J. Rountree, a former All-Area pick, will spend a post-grad year at Cheshire Academy. In other news for the Wildcats, Chol Marial, the 7-2 center, has left and is enrolled at the IMG Academy.
